  2. “Sōran Bushi” still accompanies the traditional Bon Dance in many parts of Japan, and it has its own dancing styles that date back generations. The dance moves depict fishermen dragging nets, pulling ropes and carrying luggage over their shoulders.

  4. The word bushi (節) means folk song. Soran Bushi is often accompanied by traditional Japanese instruments such as drums and flutes but today the versions usually used are pre-recorded. A modern twist. Like all folk songs, there is no original author, but the version that’s most known was done by Takio Ito, a modern folk singer from Hokkaido.
  5. Soran Bushi originates from Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido. It is a fisherman’s song evoking the process of catching herring – setting the boat out to sea, casting and retrieving the nets, folding sails, and loading the catch. The abundant lyrics are often improvised – helping to keep workers awake during several days without sleep.
  6. The expression "Land of the Rising Sun" is actually a translation of the name the Japanese use to refer to their country, Nihon. It's written using the kanji characters 日 (ni) which means "day", and 本 (hon), meaning "origin". Nihon, then, would be the country of origin of the sun.
